Porsche is no longer racing the 919 in the LeMans Prototype 1 Class (LMP1)...in fact this is the last year for the LMP1 class altogether. So they've stripped as much weight as they possibly could from it to go out to break track records.
They just announced this today on Instagram:
"Porsche's Motorsport team has broken the long-standing record of their own, fellow colleague Stefan Bellof on the Nuerburgring Nordschleife.
With 5:19.546, the Porsche 919 Hybrid clocked nearly a minute faster than the world record by Bellof in the then famous 956.007. Back on 28th May 1983, Bellof crossed the line in his 956 during training in 6:11.13 - a time that seemed unreachable for decades."
The driver is not named but is believed to be works driver Timo Bernhard.
Here's the video...no idea how he does it...think even if slowed to 1/3rd time it would still impress...and doubtful that even an F1 car could match this.
