Fuel gauge and sender unit for BJ8

I had a fuel quantity indication that was sometimes confusing or better to say more or less working correctly. Since I have already repaired the sender unit a couple of times by shortening and soldering the tiny wire of the coil, I decided to give up with the original unit and bought a replacement here in Germany.



The unit works, but the other way around like it should. I have a BJ8 and when I raise the float the resistance drops which leads to an indication close to “(E)mpty”. Now the guy responsible for spare parts told me that I might have a fuel gauge of a BJ7 that works just the other way around like the one for a BJ8.

Is he right?

Moss catalog shows one part# for all pre-BJ8 and one for BJ8.

The sending unit and the orientation of the float has been a point of confusion for quite a while. First, many (including me) would not have recognized that there are 2 sending units (unless purchasing a new one) with opposite resistance profiles. As I see it, the sending units are alike, except in the fixed direction of the float wire attachment. When comparing both units, Keep in mind that the dash gauge wire fixing stud (green line to the dash gauge) is located at the end of the internal coil that provides least resistance. Therefore, on earlier models (BJ7 and earlier), the stud will be positioned toward the Rear of the CAR with the float oriented in the opposite direction. However, on BJ8s (Phase 1 & 2), the stud and the float will be oriented to the same end, facing the Front of the CAR.

A short while back, Steve Gerow provided these drawing to explain the correct positioning of the float, with respect to the fuel tank, providing float spacing for registering Empty. Please note, with respect to the sender, Steve has presented a Pre-BJ8 sending unit, however all sending units should have their floats positioned toward the Front of the Car (as I understand all 6 cylinder models share the same fuel tank profile).





As an aside, I wonder if by repositioning the float wire support through the opposite side of the rotating peg, an early sender could be converted into a late?
