Generator going on the fritz

I believe the generator in my 62 Sprite is going on the fritz. I measured the output voltage at 10 to 11, but will not get above 11v. I'm looking for comments on; 1) do I rebuild it on my own? A little reading indicates that there is more to it than just replacing the brushes and cleaning it out. 2) do I send it out and have it rebuild? If so, anybody around Ohio that does this work? Or door number 3) do I convert to an alternator? The car is not original. It's just a fun driver, a 62 with a 1275 engine in it. So I guess I'm looking more for dependability. If I go with the alternator conversion, is there a particular unit that I should consider, size, brand name, ???

Thanks for any comments or suggestions,
Magyar

I installed the Bosch Ford Fiesta alternator in my Bugeye, and I was very pleased with the fact that I finally had enough electric power: https://www.nonlintec.com/sprite/alternator/.

That said, you should be able to make a generator work adequately. Exactly how are you measuring the output? The best way is to disconnect everything from the voltage regulator, connect the D and F terminals, and run the engine (not too fast!) You should be able to get ~20V at the generator output fairly easily. If so, your regulator might be the problem.

I've replaced the generator on all 3 of my recent "restorations" with an alternator--"full disclosure"--the cars were Nash Metropolitans--
The Met engine is the same as the MGA 1500, so it's a straight conversion using info from the MGA guru website--
I bought all 3 alternators on ebay-for $60 to $90-+(MGA-MGB-MG Midget-Triumph)---they all came with the fan installed--proper bolt adaptor in the rear,
fan belt, and
adjusting link at the front--The info on the website shows that only 2 wires from the generator have to be moved on the regulator--

www.mgaguru.com type in search box AC-101--Generator to Alternator conversion--
