Modified carb sync tool.

Has anyone modified a Unisyn or similiar device to fit over the top of a stock air cleaner? Since we all have multiple air cleaners that are a PITA to remove, this could save some skinned knuckles.

The Uni-syn's sole purpose is to balance the air flow between multiple carburetors; the simple SU tools you stick in the top of the dashpots can do the same thing, and more!

this is working pretty well for me.

tupperware bowl and hose for a sump pump. sealed in with lexel caulk. some cork glued to the bowl and then a little bit of self-stick rubber weatherstrip to seal the edge. just press it up tight. not pretty but it works.

Hi All,

Air cleaner removal is a simple task if you keep the bolt on the outside of each air cleaner and use drill a hole in the bolt of the inside attachment and use a pull-pin to secure (eliminating the nut). This allows simple removal of the outside nuts and a pull or replacement of the inside pins and washers to remove and replace the cleaners with no issues. Simply screwing the stud (with hole drilled) in or out will allow tightness adjustment. If you ever want to go back to original, simply replace the inside nuts. I have used this for a few decades now with no issues.

Keep in mind that, due to the left fender's close placement, their is limited space to properly place and hold the Unisyn during adjustment and adding any additions over the cleaners will further impede Unisyn positioning. Due to these conditions, the instrument suggested for use by Randy is a good alternative and one I have also used with good results.

The tools mentioned by Randy are just about the only way to use the piston lifting method to set mixture with any accuracy, as you can eyeball 1/32" pretty closely (I think the wire is about 1/32").

Thanks for those great responses.
I'll order an SU Tool Kit and learn to use it.
In the past, I outsourced the tune ups.
Regards.

tks Randy . I looked at all the listed tools on Moss site and I didnt see it .
Guess I may give it a try instead of my tube in the ear trick .
Just like there are different size screwdrivers, there are multiple choices (many MORE choices) for any given task. This simple and inexpensive set is what I started with forty-five (45) years ago, and what I'll use on the next set of SUs I set up.

On a different car with unlimited access at the mouth of the carbs, I might grab a UniSyn, but I wouldn't be able to tune it any better than I could with the tubes and wires. Just a different feeling handle ;)
