Laurel vs Yanny

When I first heard this on TV I clearly heard Yanny. Later, I heard it on the internet and I heard Laurel. Even on this single video - the first time I heard it I clearly heard Yanny, but a few minutes later I listened again and clearly heard Laurel. What do you hear?

(PS, when I listed to this player backwards I heard "I buried Paul" :cool-new: )

Laurel. But I am on an old laptop, with questionable speakers that may not play the high frequencies accurately? Curious if I piped that to my somewhat better TV sound system, if I would hear Yanny?

The very first time I heard this, I heard Yanlaurel. Haven't tried listening to it on different devices yet.

We always see "optical" illusions where the mind plays visual tricks. I just thought it was rather interesting to hear an "audible" illusion. I have heard it both ways and even had it change while listening.

This optical illusion always plays with my brain... are there 3 or 4 bars?

I tried it several times - never heard Laurel at all. Only heard Yanni.

Then I heard the narrator at the end: the speaker is saying Laurel, but with higher frequencies added.

If we hear sounds through our ears, our ears recognize frequencies. So if the frequencies have been changed - we hear everything at once.

The speaker may be *saying* Laurel, but the video isn't playing Laurel. It's a modified Laurel - which means the original Laurel wasn't very Hardy.

I wonder what would have been heard by those exposed to this if they had not been forewarned that there were only two choices and what those choices were. Not knowing when the sound would start the first time might have led to an attention failure and lack of focus. I only heard Laurel, but the first time the first word was unintelligible.

I hear Laurel! But saying that, I have tinnitus and my sense of sound in a higher pitch is weak. ?? PJ
