TR2/3/3A Front hub oil seal Felt?

I'm going to install these seals but I remember reading somewhere on the forum that the felt on the new seals needed to be cut back a certain amount for a good fit. How much of the felt needs to be removed? Thought I would cut them down before I soaked them in oil.

IMO, best practice is to do a trial installation without the seal; mark the position of the nut when you have the proper freeplay; then reassemble with the felt in place. Here's the write-up from the TR4 workshop manual
