MGB Found this spring in my gas tank

As some of you know, I am putting together a 1966 B. Today I was working on the sending unit in the gas tank. I was able to free up the retaining ring and get the sending unit out. When I brought it out of the tank I found this spring caught up in the float. I have never seen a spring in a B gas tank so I do not think it should be there, but I may be wrong. For sure it would not be where it would keep the float from functioning.
Have any of you any idea of where this may have come from?

That looks like a 1960s-vintage fuel hose spring. You found them on the tip of many gas pump hoses back then, to "hook" the hose onto the fuel tank opening.

Another possibility - an "anti siphon" plug. You'd push the spring down into the fuel tank neck, so no one could shove a hose down into the tank to siphon (steal) gas. Maybe this spring was pushed down just a bit too far.

My money is on the anti-siphon device. It was a bit too small an O.D. to lodge in the filler neck. The B has a larger I.D. filler neck than most domestics.
