Currently I own a 1999 xj8 and did own a 1990 xjs.

The xj8 is having an intermitted failure to crank issue.

By failure to crank I assume you mean the starter is not engaging / turning? Had the same issue on my wife's BMW Z4 not long ago - turned out in her case to be a bad starter. Hope you are able to get your issue figured out.
