BN2 shift bushing replacement

Would like to replace the BN2 shift bushing on the end of the shift lever to reduce some of the play, but have some concern about it. There are two different materials offered for this bushing, brass and plastic. What is the better choice as far as ease of installation and performance? I believe this replacement can easily be done thru the opening under the shift boot without removing the carpeting?

Remove the boot, remove the 3 fasteners that hold the retention plate down and remove the plate and any gaskets/shims, remove the shift lever gently. The bushing should come out with the lever but if the circlip is gone or the bushing is severely worn it may remain in the selector socket. Be careful not to let it fall into the gb if you have to pick it out. Replace the bushing with a brass or plastic one from the usual sources. Moss sells this one, it comes with the clip. Reinsert the lever into the socket and reassemble. Easy as pie. I'd go with brass but that is because I am part raccoon and I like shiny stuff. Somehow, if I have a choice of metal or plastic for something that goes on the Healey I lean towards metal but I currently have a plastic bushing and it has lasted so far.

Great info, and looks like an easy fix. With the brass bushing any grease inside needed to help the ball move smoother? I guess enough gear oil should splash up there during normal running.

Check to be sure that the pocket that holds the bushing isn't worn, and thus causing the slop.
While not common, the pocket in mine was egg-shaped and required me to have an insert machine and installed in the transmission.
So, just a reminder to inspect before putting the shifter back in place.

Just a reminder - the new bushing goes onto the lever before inserting the assembly into the socket.
A little grease can steady the orientation.
