TR6 TR6 Won't Start Just Clicks

Some quick background (may or may not be relevant).
1. car has always started fine.
2. transmission and clutch were removed & replaced a short time before my starting problem.
3. afterwards the car continued to start fine initially but soon refused to start.
4. when ignition key is turned on I get a single click (sounds like it is coming from starter/solenoid not the relay.

Questions:
1. Could my starting problem be related in any way to the recent transmission/clutch work?
2. what is the likely cause and solution to my starting problem?

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Have you checked/charged your battery?
Do you have seatbelt interlock?

Not likely to be related to the work IMO, except perhaps a connection wasn't tightened or something. You might check that the starter bolts are tight.

I'd try connecting a momentary jumper from the heavy battery cable to the terminal with the white/red wire at the starter solenoid. If that makes the engine crank, then there is a problem with the switch or wiring to the solenoid (and perhaps the seat belt module if you have a 74). If not, then a starter/solenoid problem, or perhaps lack of power from the battery (bad ground).

Can you push the car even a foot forward when it's in 4th gear ?
I once had a starter hang up on the flywheel...that's the test. If it rolls in gear it's not hung.

Tried rolling it in gear. It doesn’t roll. How do I fix a hung up starter? What would cause the starter to hang up?

Remove the starter; but you may have to pry it loose if it really is hung up on the flywheel's ring gear.
If it turns out not to have been hung, you probably would have wanted to remove it anyway to have it properly checked at a Starter and Alternator shop.
What makes a starter hang up ?
In a broad sense...an engagement problem...bad teeth, a weak starter.
The last one I had hang was in 1965 so I don't remember the details of the repair, just how it was diagnosed.

If starter pinion and flywheel teeth really are jammed , before taking it all apart try putting in 3rd gear and the car rocking backwards and forwards. You'll hear it release. - if it does.

It sounds like it is hung up, even if you get it freed up I would do as Poolboy recommended, pull the starter and have it checked out at a starter shop. If it hangs up once it will probably do it again. When they put a new clutch in I would hope they checked out the ring gear and replaced it if necessary. With the starter out, you might want to take a flashlight and see if you can see the teeth on the ring gear.

Getting a starter out of a TR6 is no small thing. Do a thorough check for a bad connection or ground before diving into that chore. The battery can be fully charged but if the power is not getting to the starter it is meaningless.

If the starter is hung up and I try to bump start by crossing battery cable terminal and solenoid wire, or push starting the car, will I create a worst problem for myself?

Not likely, IMO. If the starter is that badly damaged already, then it will have to be rebuilt or replaced no matter what you do now.

Not sure about access to a starter for a tr6, but I looked at some on line pictures and it looks like the back of the armature sticks out from the case and has that square shaft end like a tr3. With a tr3, you put a7/16 wrench on the square shaft on the back of the starter and turn the locked starter back out counter clockwise.

Too simple after all this to just be the solenoid. Push the button in back and wiggle it. In neutral.
