Mating OD to gearbox

I've successfully (hopefully) rebuilt and upgraded my OD and gearbox, but can't seem to get them to, uh, mate properly. I had aligned the splines in the rear of the OD with my mainshaft before assembling the gearbox, but even then they didn't want to merge and, of course, after several tries the splines became misaligned (and I don't have a much-desired spare mainshaft). I've done my best to get the splines aligned by prodding with a screwdriver but, even with them visibly aligned the two won't slip together. I tried dozens of test fittings, and got them to join one time, but didn't have the pump cam or gasket installed, so that was for naught. Any suggestions?

I have the best luck mating the O.D. to the transmission by first attaching the bell housing to the transmission and then standing the assembly on blocks on the floor bell end down on the blocks with trans above it. Then I add the O.D. From the top. Sometimes I take a thin wire and pull the follower back as it can keep you from mating the last 1/2 inch or so. (I pull the wire after the follower is on the cam. It can be a bear to do but with patience is doable.

There is a great youtube post that shows how the inner race splines of the one way sprag clutch get so they are not lined up with the splines in the planet carrier. That is likley the problem. The guy gas a great solution. Just google mating overdrive to transmission and youll find it.

Elrey's post is pretty much exactly what I would've told you too, and of course, Roscoe's video__any accurate/successful video__is a great idea too.

Worst comes to worse, I have a dedicated mainshaft, with pencil'd down splines to help line everything up (though I did it with long screwdrivers for decades myself). Found it on ebay for cheap

Patience and lots of it .
I found rather than looking to see if the splines are lined up do it by feel with thin blade screwdriver or welding rod etc .
Are you sure your getiing it past the operating lobe of the OD pump ?

For many hours and over a two week period I have been struggling with mating the overdrive to the gearbox. I have read every post I could find on both this blog and the other British car blog. I have watched every YouTube video there is on mating the A-type overdrive to the gearboxes. Not only the Austin Healey but also MG, and Triumph. I have consulted with experts on A-type overdrives and I still can’t get the overdrive to go down that last ½ inch. I have mounted the overdrive case onto the main shaft without the springs, unidirectional gear, the planetary gear, the sungear the cam or the sliding clutch. In other words no splines to line up. The case went on easily and all the way. Several of the people that posted on mating the overdrive to the gearbox had the same problem with the overdrive hanging up about ½ inch short of the fully. The replies had suggestions on how to resolve the problem but I could not find any post that talked about what finally worked. I am desperate and determined that I will not loose the battle with of the overdrive. And yes I aligned all the splines perfectly.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

X2 on the oil pump cam, and that the pump is held back until the unit is mated.

X3 on the oil pump. You can use a wire to hold the pump back out of the way.
Group,

Sorry for the long delay in in notifying the Group that the OD is finally mated to the gearbox. I wish I could explain what made the OD finally seat properly but l can't. Although I will say that after reading Bob's description of how Dave at BCS did it, I felt like a little more force would be ok. Now I wouldn't say that I forced it, but I would say that I was a little more insistent than I was on earlier tries. I don't think I my insistence did any harm because everything still seemed to turn smoothly with no funny sounds.

Thanks again everybody
Sal
