TR2/3/3A Sealer plate

My car's body was reassembled many years ago with bits from Moss and TRF. I am struggling to put on the sealer plates ( from Moss). I have riveted Captive nuts to match the holes in the plate, but on the passenger side there is not enough body sticking out and I will have to use self-tapping/sheet metal screws. The perceived problem is how to fill the space under the sealing plate and around the top edge so that water (and rust ) do not get trapped there. It will not be a very snug fit. Advice needed! Pics will follow tight, I hope.

yes, there is a flange dipped into the outer edge, which presses against the wing, and maybe stops it vibrating. there is also a rubber strip riveted to the top.
i'll have to get the pics so you can see what I have got!

Mine did not match very well either. I fabricated a new plate...which is very easy, since it only has a single bend in it. I then matched it to the contour of the wing, less about 1/2” to allow for the seal. At the top it is a matter of positioning the upper rubber seal to best match the “L” shape it has to fill...and then riveting it into place.

As you can tell, you don’t want the seal to push too heavily against the wing, or it will distort the wing shape. At the top the smaller wing radius makes it less prone to deflection, so it can have more pressure there. I think I still had to slightly trim the upper seal (or lean it forward maybe) to make it fit well.

No matter how well it seals, it will still leak some water behind the plate. Be sure there is enough opening at the rear bottom of the wing to give the water somewhere to go. That, combined with paint should keep the area rust free.

If you are willing to use it , you can use spray undercoating to finish that seal to shut out the water.
