Recycling grease question

I need to recycle the Corn Head grease removed from my steering box and cannot find any info online about whether it's OK to mix it with motor oil for recycling.

Would be grateful for any non-conjectural info on this subject.

I would contact any John Deere big equipment center for the answer. Did you remover it from you damaged steering box and will you be replacing it with more of the same?

Yup - it's from my damaged steering box and I have 2 tubes so will be replacing with same. After setting up shim(s), will fill box on bench with lid off before installing lid and topping off.

Rule when recycling oil (I have been told) is "never mix" Pay attention to detailed labeling before returning it

Yep, the EPA and CalRecycle are a bit vague on grease. The EPA, on their website, https://www.epa.gov/hw/reference-table-question-what-used-oil, the following table:

Since corn head grease is a petroleum product, not an animal or vegetable oil and not a solvent, it appears to fall within the "oil" category, so it would be acceptable as used oil.

As much as we'd all like to believe our dutifully recycled oil is processed and re-used, it ain't necessarily so. I was in Virginia City, NV once and took a ride on the old steam train they have there. I assumed they were burning wood or coal, but when I asked one of the train personnel what they were burning he said 'recycled oil.'

I wanted to recycle it and not just throw it in the trash - though my amount is tiny - maybe < 8 oz.

Might be worth a call to a local auto parts store. Several in my area take oil. I have even brought used anti-freeze to Jiffy lube.

I would not expect the person at the auto parts store to have any knowledge of what's allowed/not allowed. If you are going to call someone, the County hazmat people are more likely to have a correct answer.
