Can anybody tell me if they believe that the crankshaft on the TR's were originally specially hardened. This would include some form of nitrating. What is the preference of engine rebuilders about having the crankshaft nitrated once it has been turned down?

I believe that ST used a nitride process to harden the original cams. There has been quite a few failures of reproduction and re-ground cams for various reasons which can easily be found doing a forum search. I also think it it common practice to harden the cam surface as part of the re-grind process.

The original was Tuftrided...and yes, it is a nitride surface hardening. I have not found any modern source for tuftriding. I think the chemicals used were banned. The closest hardening you can get would be ion-nitriding, available in any large city which supports an aviation industry.

If I were building a race motor with a very high-dollar crank I would ion-nitride it. In the TR, a good used crank is only $200 to $400. I wouldn’t spend the time or money nitriding a low dollar street crank.
