can't find timing marks on 1275 crankshaft pulley/damper

We've got a 1275 in our Silver BE, and me, a flashlight, and a mirror couldn't find any timing marks on the pulley/damper today, and I wasn't real successful trying to find out what I was looking for in the manuals/catalogues/etc. Advice? Thanks, Doug

Doug,
Do you have the timing cover with the marks on the bottom? If so, you can pull the plugs and rotate to tdc and that might give you a better chance of finding the one on the HB.

Here are some photos of the factory mark and it's location in relation the the keyway. Notice the the mark is directly opposite the keyway. Rotating the engine to TDC should put the mark in the area of the pointer at the bottom of the timing cover. If the rubber ring has deteriorated to the point that the out ring has rotated away from the inner hub, these will no longer be in line and therefore give you incorrect an timing reference. That would be the time to replace/rebuild the damper as it will be rubbish.

Had the same issue. In my case, while the head was off, I determined TDC and then made my own markings and pointer. Not difficult to do.

Not likely. Rebuilding has to be done by a specialist.

That's pretty cheap for one. New is typically around $250 and rebuilt right around $100.

What is the cost of new vs rebuilt on the damper/pulley 1275? Moss $115. Will most automotive machine shops offer to rebuild them?

I can't check ours as I just dropped the car off at a shop for a mechanical/safety inspection, as it hasn't been on the road since I bought it in 1972 (yeah, I'm slow) and the motor vehicle folks apparently don't want to pull the rolls of papyrus to find when it was last registered.
AH Spares lists a new one one for 57.50 pounds (plus shipping etc.)
Q: I can't go out and look at ours, but can you see that wee dint in the pulley, so far from where my eyes and strobe light would be?
And thanks for the photos Gerard - I now know what to look for when the car comes back (and when the snow and the salt are gone...) Doug
