I think I asked this before, but anyway I have old truck lid that is down to bare metal and has bunch of little dings and what I was doing is filling the dings with left over putty on the bare metal. The question is should I have put the epoxy primer down first or should I putty first or does it matter?

Although we were always taught to put filler over bare metal, current practice is to use epoxy primer first, then put the filler over the primer. Filler must be put over epoxy primer in the window specified by the primer manufacturer or if the window passes, the primer needs to be scuffed. Nevertheless, I have put filler over rust-free metal, then epoxy-primed, followed by primer surfacer and it's been holding for the past 20 years.

Though it works either way, the current “correct” way is prime first then fill.
