TR4/4A TR4 front plate seal

The last time I removed the front engine plate from my TR4 the RTV was so effective that I actually bent the plate while removing it. I think I used the Super Copper Permatex silicone. I will use al aluminum plate on my current assembly and I don't want to repeat the error. I want to avoid leaks but need something less aggressive than the RTV. Can anyone suggest a better sealant?

One of the things I really like about Hylomar is that it never hardens and remains easily removable even many years later. It's a shame the original formula is no longer available; but the "Hylomar Universal Blue" being sold today is pretty close.

I’m fond of the original blue Hylomar as well as Permatex Ultra Gray and Ultra Black, but Hylomar doesn’t harden.

Do you like the Hylomar for the rear main "rope" seal too?
Err, you mean the felt on the sides of the rear main cap? I use Permatex Aviation there. Like the book says, cut the felt into sections, soak in the sealer, then tamp them into place. Done properly (IMO), the Permatex oozes out the cracks, showing that the cavity is completely filled.

A "rope" seal is something else. The scroll seal on a TR2-4A is actually an improvement over a rope seal, IMO. (The rope seal on my Ferguson tractor with the Standard engine leaks far worse than any scroll seal I've seen.)

Thanks for that. Yes, I was actually referring to the felt pieces that are jammed along side the rear main cap.I will use the Permatex Aviation. (rather than the Indianhead stuff).
