The Prince of Darkness on the dash board finally conquered

Guys

I have been working over the past couple of years to illuminate the instrum:cheers:ents in the dash with LEDs. The Speedo and the Rev Counter were the easy ones using wedge type LEDs and wedge bulb holders. The fuel gauge and the oil and temp gauges were the difficult ones.

I manufactured a cap with a 2 inch hole in it to go over the fuel gauge and installed an LED lighting strip inside it. My earlier thread showed the result of all that, albeit very bright due to the camera work.

Today I finalized the work on the oil and temp gauge. I used the same idea of a cap but had to cut a slot in the edge of it to allow the cap to go over the oil and water lines first. I installed a hinged 'gate' on this one to close the slot once it was over the back of the gauge, worked a treat.

I now have all the gauges glowing nicely in the dark with the two on the outside showing a delicate shade of blue - Mmmmm nice!

The indicator light is so bright that you can see it in broad daylight - handy 'cause the noise from the indicator relay is so faint it is lost in the roar of the engine. :wink-new:

Hi Bob - I clicked that link, but it only works if you're signed in to Google Photos (so most of us probably won't see the photo).

Why not upload the photo directly to your post -

Click Reply. Above the Reply box, you'll see a row of icons. Third icon from the right is a square. Click the icon and you'll see Insert Image. Choose From Computer, then Choose File, then Upload. Once it appears in your reply, double-click the image if you want to make it larger.

Voila!

Thanks Steve

Read your PM before checking post. This is the Ring/cap with a strip LED installed inside, around the edge, The 'gate' is open ready to install it over the instrument. I am trying to get a representative image so that the effect can be seen correctly, my earlier images were too bright and not representative of the real thing.

Even more success - ish

DSCN4236.jpg

Much better than my attempt when I had installed the LED in just the fuel gauge. The lighting is more subdued and represents the real thing - almost.

Bob - congrats on the lighting work. It's hard to tell brightness from a photo (as cameras and phones these days often adjust bright and dark automatically).

Are the two outer gauge faces actually that much brighter than the two inner gauges?

Thanks.

Not really I think that it is the difference in the colour that makes it look that way, the speedo and the rev counter also look the same in reality but they there appears to be a difference between them in the shot.
