100 X Brace Color?

I have a question about the X brace that sits behind the grille and in front of the radiator, should that be body color or black? On my car they are body color. It has been suggested that this is incorrect and that they should be satin black so that they are less visible? I would be interested in opinions on this? I am fairly certain that body color is correct, but want to get some more expert input.

Not sure about the 100, but on my BT7 they are hand painted flat or satin black as to not be visible on a white car. I doubt they painted it on a black car.

After a bit more research, what I am hearing is that most of the cars the X brace was body color, but that there are some exceptions, apparently white cars and some others had the X brace hand painted satin black. If any real experts can confirm that it would be great.

Anderson/Moment -- 100s, P.29, caption - vertical panel and x-braces painted body color. P.147 for the convertibles, left column upper: brush-painted flat black except for the black cars. Roadsters - P.75 rt column, upper: brush-painted flat black except for black cars

Was wondering the same thing. My tri carb has only the single running/ flashers. Perhaps the doubles were for a country with more stringent regs. My car is a U.S. market Ivory White with the X brace black as well.

3000 MK II tri-carb with separate side lamps and flashing indicator lamps ? Never see that before.

It is a German Export, cars for Germany and Sweden had separate lights on both the front and rear! Both the front and rear shrouds were modified to fit the lights! My research indicates there were less than 100 German and Swedish tri-carb exports with this configuration.

Thanks,
Duane

Healey Blue (aka healey blue) also has a BT7 like that; also has steering column lock and octagonal hub nuts, several years before the US required them (January 1st, 1968).

Thanks for the input, we drifted away from the main topic a bit :chuncky: Pretty clear to me that for the 100, the X brace is body color except for some very specific exceptions.

The German delivery car is the BJ7. The BT7 was a tri carb. Too many letter combos that sound the same to keep them straight.

Clearly! At least I consistently get them wrong... ;)

Randy,

You were very close, since the BN7, BT7, and the BJ7 all came in the glass two light configuration for Germany and Sweden!!!

Thanks,
Duane

Sure like that red one!

I'd always been partial to the 2-seater, ever since R&T's article on all the Healey variants in the early 70s (June '72?). It's no wonder I fell for BN6L/942 when I saw it in Ray's shop (Healey West) around the Christmas Holidays 1977. He had it strategically parked next to the parts counter__which served as the cocktail bar__and the more I looked at it (along with the more I drank) the more I knew I had to have it. Seeing this, Ray knew he'd set the hook when he said "I'll finance it."

The rest has been a continuing history.

Getting back on topic, though my car was originally Healey Blue/OEW, and then silver by the time I bought it, the cross-piece was still painted a mat-black. I had cut it out sometime in the 80s to fit an electric fan, or it'd be Wine Red today (that's dark enough to not show through the grill).

If I remember the numbers, most 100's were two tone. Mine was originally Reno Red over Black but repainted several times and is now Healey blue. I can find Red, Black and several others colors on the X brace. So when we say that the X brace should be "Body color", which color would that refer to - the Red on top or the black in the cove?

I think from memory the two tone only came 'factory fitted' in the BN2. All the BN1's were originally solid although a lot of owners added the second colour retrospectively. I am happy to have my memory corrected as I don't have my books handy to check!

I think you are correct, though I don't have evidence (the Moment/Anderson book might say, but mine's in another city right now). I've read/heard that only 100Ms came from the factory in two-tone, and the vast majority of them were white/black (ours was).
