That is how it works.
I suggest you leave some extra length of that 'chrome' piece as it will shrink.
First time I did this I trimmed it and it shrank so much the trim piece would not cover the gap.
Next time I left a couple of inches and let it shrink for about 3 years - then trimmed and installed that piece.
It has continued to shrink! At this time the trim piece just barely covers the gap.
I think if you keep one of these long enough that chrome strip shrinks and shrinks until it will disappear altogether.

Over the years that I have been at this project, I have accumulated 3 complete pieces of the plastic chrome strips. If you need a section of it, let me know how much you want and I'll send it to you gratis. I have one small piece that looks like it is supposed to join the ends. About 2 inches long Moss 801-040 $1.39.

The Roadster Factory sells three different lengths of that metal finisher piece. They go from about 1-1/2" to a good 2". But the real deal is the "all metal" chrome finisher pieces that the early TR4's came with. It came in 2 pieces -- a right and left. Then you had two of the short finisher pieces.
