BJ8 Bumpers Comparison

I am looking at new bumpers for my BJ8 restoration. Can anyone comment on fit, quality, etc. comparison between the bumpers available from Moss and those available from Denis Welch?

Thank you in advance for any insights offered.

The reproduction bumpers are like beer cans compared to the originals . If you have originals that just need rechrome and straightening etc then just bite the bullet and go with the originals . It will cost you a lot more than repro but they will have better chrome and will last a lot longer .

Thanks, HN. Moss' higher price bumpers claim to be "of original gauge steel with premium chroming." Same for Welch and AH Spares in England. The low price and multiple disclaimers on Moss' other bumper option suggest it might indeed be made of beer can. Is your warning all encompassing or aimed at the cheaper options?

The premium grade Moss bumpers are just fine for drivers' application. I have these installed on the BJ-7 front and back and are close to originals in fitment. The restored originals are wrapped and stored away for now. GONZO

I have originals and I have a repro kicking around in the shop . There is simply no comparison . The original is double the weight of the repro . They maybe making a higher grade bumper than the cheap beer can however the quality of the steel may not be as good . As a comparison both my 64 and 67 BJ8s have the original brake drums and rotors ..
How many times have you replaced the rotors on your daily driver in its lifetime ????

I had to replace a rear bumper last year and I opted to go for Moss's "premium" bumper bar at about $400 since the description of the cheaper bumper bar scared me. I don't see any difference between the premium bar and the original. Looks like the price has increase a hundred bucks since last year.

Hi All,

As I see it, the bumpers on a Healey are for decoration only and strength and rigidity, for protective purposes, are not in the picture. Additionally, when considering the quality of a replacement, having perfection in the chrome is only a nice to have and a middle quality chrome finish was what I remember was standard on a new car. In 1989, when completing my Healey rejuvenation, I purchased replacement bumpers from Moss and found the steel to be lighter then original but the chrome quality to be about equal. Although over the years the front bumper did suffer from slight pitting from road sand/debris, the reduced use of the redone car allowed the new chrome bumpers to equal the pitting/time resulting from the much higher use when the original chrome bumpers were in place.

All in all, for those looking to build a perfect car, I would suggest taking the path of re-chroming original steel. However, I would also suggest this would also require the re-chroming of all original chromed parts at the same quality. However, for those not looking for perfection and want to enjoy driving their Healey, I would recommend considering a mid-quality chrome finish would do nicely.

My opinion,
Ray(64BJ8P1)
