Original GT6 Mk 1 cooling fan

    Hi folks,

I'm looking for an original radiator cooling fan for a 1968 GT6 Mk1. If anyone can point me to one, or has one they'd like to part with, please advise and we'll take the conversation off line. Many thanks.

Jeff, are you talking about the 7 blade yellow plastic one?
There was a 8 blade one that went on some early 1600 Vitesse's. I may have one of each up in the warehouse if that is what you are talking about.

I have this one 7-blade, think it's from an early TR250-TR6.

Hi Wayne - The yellow plastic fan appeared on the GT6+ in 1969. I believe the 1968 GT6 Mk1 had the same fan as the 1967 Mk 1 - it was pressed steel with aluminum blades riveted in place, six blades(?). Could you examine the Vitesse fan blade? Perhaps it is the same.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Thanks Peter. I believe this one was on the 69 GT6+ on the new engine that came out at KD50000. The one I'm looking for was pressed steel with riveted aluminum (?) fan blades - six I believe.

Jeff, will look tomorrow, but the last one I remember had the rivets coming out. Have seen a couple come through the hood, not a pretty sight.

That fan is also a popular one used on TR3/4 engines as an option, its known as a tropical fan. Sometimes they get pretty pricey.

Jeff, not in the warehouse, but one more place it might be.
I only hope it's in good shape if I can find it.
I think I took one off a buddy's TR4 a few years back, will look there also.

CIMG0064.jpgCIMG0063.jpgJeff this is what I found and don't know if this is what we are looking for. It does not fit the crank case holes but maybe a waterpump. Can't remember where they went on the early ones and I looked at the ends of the blades and it seems they were square. Getting old is not for sissies.

Re: Original GT6 Mk 1 cooling fan

Jeff, this is the only rivet fan I found in all my stacks and I don't think it's the one we are talking about. This might be off a Mustang but the holes do not line up for the crank pulley, but may do on a water pump, don't have one to check right now and I think the blades were square on the end.
    Anyway we tried.

Hi Peter - I'm fairly certain these in the US were on the GT6+. On the MK.1 in the US, I believe the fan in 1968 was the same as that on the 67 - pressed steel with aluminum blades. I could be wrong as I'm having a devil of a time finding documentation.

Interesting Wayne. On the GT6 they went on the crankshaft pulley. I wonder what car this one is from. Many thanks for digging this up, and hold on to it as in the end I may have to improvise. Jeff

Jeff, My '68 mk1 has the fan shown on the right in Peter's photo. Its serial # is 13000L (62 #'s after yours). I bought the vehicle (with its fan) in '83 when it was just a 15 yr old used car .... Maybe this helps...or not.

Jay's fan is also what is on my '67 GT6.

I have seen a fan like those Wayne has. It was on a TR-2000 sedan's engine.

That does look like the tropical fan but I'm surprised the holes don't line up.

Doug, Now that's a surprise to me. Here I thought the yellow fans didn't appear on GT6 Mk1's until after April 1, 1968. That's the date when they had to meet the new U.S. Fed standards for emissions and safety. Those Mk1's not only had the plastic fans, they had the distributor with both vacuum advance and retard, the wild plumbing of the CDs carbs, the retarded ignition setting (4°After TDC)...which if set there made the car almost undriveable, the 13lb. radiator cap, and the dual brake master with the warning light on the far left of the dash.

This is encouraging stuff. My car is KC12938 and was manufactured in April 1968. It currently has the yellow fan, and I assumed (because I can't find definitive documentation) that it was from a GT6+. Doug, are you saying the yellow eight blade fan was with the package of late 68 emission and safety improvements? I have all the other features you mention, although I'm in search of the metal emissions vacuum lines you have pictured. Mine are traditional black plastic vacuum lines. You'll see I've posted another thread in search of the metal lines. Thanks.

Re: Original GT6 Mk 1 cooling fan

Jay, our GT6 is a '67 built for export to the U.S. but picked up in London by my father-in-law. Prior to us getting the car many years ago he may have changed a few things. However, I am certain that our regular CD carbs (not CD2) are original as is the Delco dizzy with only vacuum advance. The plastic fan that is on our engine does indeed look like yours. I am not sure I would call ours yellow. From age ours looks sort of off-white or cream colored. As such, during an engine rebuild 4 years ago I used cream plastic/vinyl paint to re-color it.

What I find surprising is that your car, only one year newer than ours, has the dual brake line system with PDWA, the advance/retard dizzy, and a brake master cylinder that looks very much like what was on our '72 Spitfire.

Incidentally, Jeff (the OP) is also looking for those emissions tubes connected to the PCV valve fitting on the intake manifold. If he doesn't find what he is looking for, maybe you could measure what you have so he can duplicate it.
