T-Series T is for Tires

Hello all,

I am the caretaker of a '55 TF-1500. It has been sitting for a few years and is currently on blocks because (This is a bit embarrassing) despite two rebuilds -I believe it still (Sort of) has the original tires that it was wearing when my family purchased it in '73. The first step to getting it going is replacing the disintegrated tires. Can someone recommend a set of tires that will be safe, affordable and not completely offensive to the purists?

Thanks!

I've heard good things about the Vredestein Classics.

I admit, I've used the whatever-I-can-find-locally method for my cars and not had any problem. That doesn't get you something particularly "period correct-ish" but it works.

The Vredesteins seem to come out on top in every evaluation I have seen. I am considering them for my TR4A, when I reach that point.

On my TD, I used Nankangs, but I never made any great demands on them. They seemed fine.

Just checking options and a local shop recommended Federal ss657 tires. These are significantly less expensive but the reviews I am finding online are not hair-raising. Does anyone have any feelings about these?

Thank you!

Oh! Last panicked question... All of the tires these days are radials, do I -or- can I -or- should I plan to use intertubes still?

Thanks!

If you have spoked rims I believe you will need inner tubes

My new wire wheels are tubeless, but the originals need tubes. Make sure new inter bands are installed to protect the tubes from the spoke nipples damaging them. Don't use oversize tubes, they will create folds and will deteriorate faster at the folds edge. PJ
