TR4/4A Thank you for this forum!

We finally were able to start the 1966 TR4A engine after a long year+ of work. It fired quickly and sounds good. The heavy mechanical work is done!

One of the last challenges was figuring out the operation and adjustment of the clutch slave cylinder. I missed the subtle note in the shop manual that stated the cutch was self adjusting.

A few minutes searching this forum gave me the guidance I needed to make things work properly.

Many thanks to all of you for your prior posts as well as your responses directly to my inquiries.

Now back to the "37 Chevy!

Maybe I missed that note too - but I am always careful to assure the slave is correctly adjusted.

Hi Geo,

Yes, that was driving me crazy. I kept trying to make the adjustment for the 0.10" of clearance and it would always disappear! And I could never get the clutch to disengage.

After searching posts on this forum I determined that somewhere along the way there was a change that eliminated the external return spring and added a spring behind the piston in the slave cylinder. In other words it became more like all the current hydraulic clutches I deal with frequently.

I went back to the shop manual which includes TR4A updates. That is when I realized that there was a separate page that showed the TR4A clutch (2-109). I compared it to 2-101 and saw the difference in the descriptions of the adjusting mechanism. Another clue I saw was that the cut-away view of the slave cylinder (Figure 7 page 2-106) does not show a spring behind the piston. It was very obvious that the slave cylinder I was using had a spring pushing on the piston. The TR4A design relies upon pressure from the clutch to push the throw-out bearing back sufficiently so there is little if any load on it when the clutch is engaged to drive the vehicle.

So there is now no external return spring and everything works great!

Like I said, without this forum I would still be struggling.

Rusty
