TR2/3/3A Moss LED Tailight Kit

For those of you who have installed Moss's LED Tail Light Kit # 143-810, does it support turn signals on an early 1956 TR3? The instructions mention park lights and brake lights, but nothing about turn signals. The color code for right and left brake lights is the same green/purple. I believe Marvin Gruber said he used a TR4 rear harness in this car that would allow the outer lights to be both brake and turn lights as well as park lights, but right now my only brake light is the small center light just above the tag. I've only had this kit for 10 months, no need to get in a rush.

Don't know for certain, but I'm pretty sure it won't work properly without some other modifications. The stock turn flasher is load sensitive, meaning it won't work right unless it "sees" current for two bulbs. You'll need to either convert to a flasher for use with LEDs, or add dummy load resistors so the stock flasher sees the right amount of current.

As far as making the corner lamps do triple duty; a TR4 harness wouldn't be enough. You need some sort of logic device so the same filament can work for both turn signals and brake lights. I "rolled my own" with some relays mounted to a panel under the dash (and the stock harness), but there are commercial boxes available that will do the same thing. (I also had to add the dummy load resistors to make the turn flasher work properly, since the relay coils don't draw as much current as the bulb filaments.)

Is the Moss TR3 Taillight Kit significantly brighter than just using LED bulbs in the original taillight base? Anyone know how many lumens?

My rule of thumb is: If they don't tell you, you won't like the answer.

Put another way, if they knew it was a Good Thing, they would tell you about it (in order to sell more product).

The Litezupp bulbs (designed specifically for the angle of the TR3 holder) compare very well (in a casual parking lot comparison) to my homebrew setup, which should be somewhere close to 250 lumens. In theory, that is less light than a standard 1157 bulb (rated 400 lumens), but visually (at least to my eyes) they come out a LOT brighter.

It's very tough to capture accurate comparisons with a camera, but this might give you some idea. The RH lamp is a 500 lumen incandescent bulb, while the LH lamp has (4) "3 watt" LED stars in it (rated 70 lumens each, average).
